So You’re Thinking of Attending a Wedding in Colorado….

So you’re thinking of attending our wedding a Colorado – we couldn’t be happier to have you join us!  We do want to provide you with a few recommendations for packing, weather, and altitude.  We’ll cover a travel guide for planning the rest of your Colorado adventure in a separate post.

Packing Considerations

Atmospherics: This wedding will take place outdoors on a working farm.  While moving through the property is easy, it is still mostly dirt, and we recommend planning accordingly.

Shoes: Wedges or flats are highly recommended for the ladies.  Men will likely be fine as long as they were planning to wear shoes they could dance in (which is pretty much mandatory for Kim and Stephen’s wedding anyway!!).

Formality: Semi-formal. The wedding party will be in tuxes and long dresses.  BUT we are doing it for the fun of it, and with the knowledge that these outfits are not particularly practical for a wedding in an orchard. That said, feel free to join us in tuxes/long dresses if the mood strikes!

Layers: Any Coloradoan will tell you if you don’t like the weather, wait ten minutes.  We often experience all four seasons in one day.  At a minimum, you will want a sweater/sweatshirt/jacket for after the sun goes down, and no one will look at you strangely if you bring additional sub-layers for more flexibility.

Rainwear (just in case!): It doesn’t often rain in the fall in Colorado (knock on wood!!) and the event will have a tent back-up in case it looks threatening, but it always pays to be prepared with a rain coat or an umbrella.  And if everyone comes prepared, by definition the day will be dry!

Swimsuit: One option for the day after our wedding may be to enjoy labor day weekend celebrations at a local reservoir – never hurts to have a suit on hand!

Weather & Altitude:

Altitude

At 5430 feet above sea level, Boulder is over a mile high.  People react differently to altitude.  Boulder is also a dry climate. It usually takes a few days to adjust to the altitude, so you may be out of breath following exercise or heavy walking during the first few days. Drink plenty of water.  And be careful with alcohol – the same amount of alcohol at altitude can be equivalent to twice the quantity at sea-level.  This is partially because it can dehydrate you in an already dry climate.   If in doubt drink plenty of water.  Altitude sickness can strike unexpectedly; it makes you feel drowsy and unwell.  It usually only lasts for 24 hours – the only method of recovering is rest and returning to a lower altitude.  Prevention is the best cure – did we mention to drink plenty of water?

Weather

At the beginning of September the weather in Boulder, Colorado is usually sunny but might be chilly. The average high is 75 with a low of 47. However, temperatures have sometimes dropped into the 30’s this time of year.  And, there’s a very small risk you could see rain or snow.  We are crossing our fingers for sun and warmth! We are planning to have our ceremony and reception outdoors. Women should plan to bring a shawl or sweater for later in the evening. However we will do everything possible to ensure the comfort of our guests by providing heaters or tents if necessary.
